Roots and Early Inspiration
Gus Mike Pérez is a Colombian novelist, educator, and literary advocate whose voice has become a touchstone for contemporary stories of migration, resilience, and hope. Born and raised in Colombia, Gus first discovered the transformative power of literature as a student, finding in books both a refuge and a window to new worlds. His early experiences shaped a lifelong passion for storytelling and a deep commitment to amplifying the narratives of those whose voices are too often unheard.
Academic Background and Teaching
After obtaining his Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Literature from the Technological University of Pereira, Gus began his professional journey as a language and literature teacher in Colombia.
He later migrated to the United States, where he navigated his own border crossings, cultural adaptation, and the challenges of building a new life. His work as an educator—first in Colombia and then in Florida—has given him the privilege of mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and fostering cultural understanding through language and the arts.
Writing Journey
Gus’s debut novel, The Tern’s Journey, draws inspiration from real stories of migration across the Americas. Through evocative prose and compassionate insight, the novel traces the harrowing challenges and luminous dreams of families journeying north in search of safety, dignity, and belonging.
The book has resonated with readers worldwide for its honesty, empathy, and unfiltered look at the cost and strength involved in leaving everything behind in pursuit of hope.
Gus Mike Pérez is also the creator of La heredad oscura, a forthcoming novel that blends elements of mystery, generational legacy, and the haunting pull of family history. His work often explores the intersection between personal identity and collective memory, honoring the courage of migrants while questioning the structures that require such courage.
Advocacy, Community and Personal Life
Creative storyteller and thinker. A dedicated advocate for migrants and the value of cultural diversity, Gus frequently speaks at schools, universities, and literary festivals. He is known for his ability to foster meaningful conversations about migration, language, trauma, and the power of narrative to build bridges between communities.
